Low-Odor Dry-Erase Paint FAQ

Explore a range of common questions and concerns regarding our innovative products designed to improve the way you work, learn, and play.

The instructions refer to “Fresh Air Ventilation.” What does that mean?
WriteyBoard 2-Part Low Odor Dry Erase Paint is a very low V.O.C. product. To minimize the already low odor and allow fresh air to circulate, open an outside window or place a fan in front of the window to help draw air out. Additionally, keep the door to the room closed and cover air conditioning/heating vents while the product is being applied and while it cures.

Does 2-Part Low Odor Dry Erase Paint have to be all mixed and used at one time?
No! 2-Part Low Odor Dry Erase Whiteboard Paint can be mixed to the desired amount you need (1 ounce of combined A&B product covers 3 sq. ft). Then reseal the containers for use at a later time.

What is the POT LIFE for the 2-Part Low Odor Dry Erase Paint? In other words, once Part A and Part B are combined, how long will it stay liquid?
In most conditions, approximately 60 minutes. We recommend to mix only enough product that can be applied within 40 minutes.

How do I prep my wall?
Lightly sandpaper the existing surface to remove any peaks or runs. Then remove dust with a tack cloth or water-moistened cloth, making sure the surface is completely dry and dust-free before applying paint.

Does Writeyboard 2-Part Low Odor Dry Erase Paint have to be applied over a primer?
2-Part Low Odor Dry Erase Paint applies directly over exiting top-coat latex paint, as well as numerous other surfaces. However, it can be applied directly over primer, just not required.

I am thinking of painting over a dark color surface with white dry erase paint. What can I do to make sure that the dark color does not show through my Low Odor WHITE Dry Erase Paint?
How to make a whiteboard wall: On darker surfaces (grey, black walls etc.), prime the wall with a water-based primer designed to hide the dark color. Kilz 2, or any other such white primer will work well. Wait until the primer is thoroughly dry and cured, then paint with your low odor white dry erase paint.

How smooth of a surface is required before making it a dry erase surface?
A smooth surface is essential to achieve optimal results. A textured or porous surface will cause the paint to cure unevenly and result in reduced performance. In most cases a light sanding with 120 grit sandpaper may be all that is required to achieve the desired level of smoothness.

How soon can I apply 2-Part Low Odor Dry Erase Paint over a freshly painted wall?
You can apply your 2-Part Low Odor Dry Erase Paint 48 hours after the latex paint has dried.

Can I use Acrylic or Oil-based paints and, if so, how long do I need to wait before applying 2-Part Low Odor Dry Erase Paint to the surface?
Yes, just ask your paint supplier for an acrylic or oil-based paint that cures in 24 hours, after which time you can apply your WriteyBoard 2-Part Low Odor Dry Erase Paint.

Can I use regular paint trays to apply my 2-Part Low Odor Dry Erase Paint?
How to use dry erase paint: Yes, you can paint directly from a standard metal paint tray (bare metal) or a plastic tray liner (recyclable #5).

What kind of paint roller and brush should I use when applying the product?
Any good quality, all-purpose paint brush will do the job. In addition, you can use low-nap, zero-lint roller (small pore sponge or mohair) or most rollers specified for epoxy finishes can be used. Our favorite roller is the Purdy White Dove, ¼ inch nap, lint free, used for all latex and oil based paints, with woven dralon fabric.

Do I stir or shake the product before using?
We highly recommend stirring the product to minimize air being mixed into the product.

How do I mix low odor dry erase paint (2-part)? What is the ratio of Part A and Part B?
Thoroughly stir Part A in its container and thoroughly stir Part B in its container using separate stir sticks. Combine 3-parts of Part A to 1-part of Part B in another container. Dispense enough product to coat the area that you are covering (1 ounce of combined product will cover 3 square feet).

How many coats will it take?
Over most surfaces (prepped latex-painted wall), only 1 coat is needed; a properly applied coat thinly covers the surface without leaving runs or drips.

What can I do so I can use the same brush/roller all day without it drying out?
Squeeze out as much product from the brush as possible back into the mixed-product container. Then wrap the brush/roller in plastic, which will help keep the brush supple. The curing of the product is based on a number of items including the duration of time.

How do I clean up or properly dispose of the paint tray liner and brush?
Allow the tray and brush to dry and then dispose according to local codes.

Should I run a fan over the surface to help it cure?
No, our product is designed to dry in regular air environment. Pointing a fan at the surface may cause the product to dry unevenly. Instead, use the fan in front of an open window to help draw air out of the room.

When can Permanent Marker (Sharpie) be removed?
Permanent marker and regular marker made seven (7) days after installation can be removed with Isopropyl Alcohol 70%; after ten (10) days by using Goof-off ™ in the aerosol-spray-can. Just spray Goof-off ™ in the aerosol-spray-can on a paper towel and wipe. Then wipe off any Goof-off ™ cleaner that may be remaining on the surface with a water-wet cloth. Allow your dry erase paint surface to dry for ten (10) minutes before using dry erase markers after using Goof-off ™ aerosol spray cleaner. For best results, remove permanent marker as soon as possible after the permanent marker has been used.

Will dry erase board cleaner available at most stores work on the surface?
Yes, traditional cleaners will work fine or, make your own cleaner (a mixture of half Isopropyl Alcohol 70% and half water). Most general build-up can be removed inexpensively using a glass cleaner with ammonia (ex. Windex w/Ammonia-D) or Goof Off Aerosol.

I’ve got something I can’t identify on the surface – what can I use to remove it?
Goof-off ™ in the aerosol-spray-can will remove most difficult and unknown markings. You can also use Goof-off ™ in the aerosol-spray-can ten (10) days after your two-part low odor dry erase paint was ready for use. It is easy to use, just spray it on a paper towel and wipe. Being an epoxy type paint, and that sunlight can cause the color of the surface to change, what recommendations do you suggest if I am using this in a sunlit room?
UV sunlight and sodium vapor lights can cause discoloration in epoxy surfaces. Blinds or UV film can reduce the affect and replacing sodium vapor lights with other lighting will help keep the new look of your Low Odor Dry Erase (2-part) Paint. You may also consider our (one) 1-PART dry erase paint product which is an indoor & outdoor product and contains UV protection.

Can I apply WriteyBoard 2-Part Low Odor Dry Erase Paint over magnetic paint?
No because magnetic paints have a rough profile, which makes the whiteboard surface not smooth.

Can WriteyBoard 2-Part Low Odor Dry Erase Paint be used as anti-graffiti paint?
Yes, WriteyBoard 2-Part Low Odor Dry Erase Paint is excellent for anti-graffiti use. Note: the more porous the existing surface, the more coats of paint will be needed, i.e. if the surface has a sealant or has been painted, 1 coat should suffice; untreated concrete or brick will require several coats.

I realize that a typical white dry erase surface over an entire wall would be very hard to look at for an extended time; what color wall would you suggest?
A muted white or a color will help keep keeping everyone’s eyes fresh and alert.

Do I need to use a conditioner after the paint is applied to keep it erasable?
No!!! WriteyBoard 2-Part Low Odor Dry Erase Paint is a conditioner-free product!

Before I paint, can I make a grid that will be visible through the transparent surface yet can’t be erased?
Yes, only with the CLEAR color. Either paint the lines or graphics on the surface before covering it with our CLEAR 2-Part Low Odor Dry Erase Paint OR wait about 45-60 minutes after applying the last coat of 2-Part Low Odor Dry Erase Paint, then add the lines/graphics directly on the surface with any color Sharpie Permanent marker or regular marker; as the paint cures, the markings will infuse into the surface.
